Graphium Sarpedon Luctatius - common Bluebottle Like the common Blue Jay, this is a monstrously difficult butterfly to photograph. They prefer to fly the high canopy, rarely coming down low enough for camera access. Another gorgeous butterfly that I feel fortunate to find locally.<br /> <br /> Location is Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. I tried lying down in the mud and waiting, but he would not return until I had left.<br /> <br /> Mud puddling is mostly done by the males.       All my bug photography is early morning. This one was shot at 09:16am, so probably already warmed up. The earliest of my images was 08:30. This indicates that the warm-up is done up in the canopy.

      I have managed 6 sessions for 8 images with this species in 3 years. Sometimes you just get lucky.

        My best butterfly photos are from breeding caterpillars through and shooting before they are properly ready for flight. This plays into my interest in life stages. My tropical interactions are about one weekly visit per year. :( Posted 9 years ago

          Martin these butterflies you upload are gorgeous, the Australian and Asian are out of this world, please keep sending them in i have a few butterfly paperback and hardback books of countries will see if this butterfly is in the Aust book. Posted 9 years ago

The Common Bluebottle

The Common Bluebottle, or Blue Triangle in Australia, is a species of swallowtail butterfly, that is found in South and Southeast Asia, as well as eastern Australia. There are approximately sixteen subspecies with differing geographical distributions.
