Fungus?

I'm not sure at all what this is….

  1. I'm having a deja vu feeling with this one, saw something similar a few years ago, but can't recall where. My gut feeling is that it is indeed a fungus. Posted 9 years ago
    1. I think I might have a photo of the same or similar thing from a year ago - it's got a slug in it that I couldn't ID either… I do think it's a fungus, but in all of the fungi I've researched I've never come across anything quite like it, so I'm not even sure where to start in an ID search Posted 9 years ago
  2. Sorry, just deleted my comment. Not sure at all. Posted 9 years ago, modified 9 years ago
    1. I doubt it's a bolete. It has no gills or pores that are visible. The "cap" really isn't a cap, but a fuzz that comes off and shows the same brown color and texture as the body. I get the feeling it's some sort of Xylaria. The scale is not obvious here, but it's quite small. I've got an old photo of just a fuzzy grey bump that I think might be a younger version of the same thing.

This one is actually quite near my home, so I should probably wander back there sometime to see what it looks like now. It bears some resemblance to Xylaria polymorpha, which true to it's name takes quite a few different looking forms. If it has turned or turns sort of black and burnt, that would be a good confirmation. If it comes down to it, I tend to prefer to leave things unidentified rather than subject them to destructive identification, especially with things like this which was pretty unique - just one small nodule and not something I see on a regular basis.

  3. Unfortunately some mysteries require destructive science. Posted 9 years ago
  4. Actually that 'chew hole' on the right one might be revealing some gill structure.. angle and gaps are good for it. Nice colour to the whole thing anyway :) Posted 9 years ago, modified 9 years ago
