Sun Bear 23 Sep, 2015. The smallest existing bear species and best climber. The species is threatened by deforestation and loss of habitat. These are in the Sun Bear Conservation Center in Sepilok. They are rescued, rehabilitated and released in the wild in safer places than where they were found. I do not classify them as captive because they are in the center only temporarily. In this case a couple was in the displayed area of their enclosed forest. They are territorial and fight with each other so others are kept in different areas. This couple got along wll so they kept them together. The pic is from the female who was digging in the ground ins earch for food (mostly insects).<br />

Sun Bears on Borneo (Helarctos malayanus euryspilus) are sufficiently different from those on the Asian mainland and Sumatra, representing the typical form (H. m. malayanus), as to warrant subspecific differentiation (Meijaard 2004)
