Spider hunting fly ♂ (Leucopsina odyneroides) A small head with all-encompassing eyes. High domed thorax.
Very large calypters which give away it's flyness.
Body length about 10mm.
On Leptospermum or Kunzea sp. flowers at the edge of a local national park.
This fly is visually very similar to a species of wasp which appears at the same time of year that I think there must be some mimicry going on.
<img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/media.jungledragon.com/images/2532/37270_thumb.JPG?AWSAccessKeyId=05GMT0V3GWVNE7GGM1R2&Expires=1759968010&Signature=D9oRNhSoxaFOs972YCEOcegvCQE%3D" width="200" height="150" alt="Eumenninae wasp (?Paralastor sp.)
