This is a common fly that is found in the parts of Kerala. In the local language, it is called "Thumbi". Usually, the fly is seen just after the rains to enjoy the warmth of the Sun. This is why the Onam season of Kerala also marks the arrival of this fly in the court-yards and among the bushes. They are seen in abundance during that season.
