Holonychus sp., Masoala, Madagascar Oh how I would love to know what this is. It looks like a well-camouflaged snout beetle to me. Its size is remarkable if this is the case, I estimate it at about 8 cm (3"). Africa,Geotagged,Madagascar,Madagascar North,Masoala,Spring,World Click/tap to enlarge

  1. It looks like Gonipterus scutellatus to me. Australian endemic, but spread out to Madagascar as well. Posted 9 years ago
    1. Thanks for the research, Jivko! It looks somewhat alike, but I'm not sure if it is an exact match. The one I found is at least 5 times larger, has a rougher texture, and whitish legs. Sorry! Posted 9 years ago
  2. Looks like an Elephant Weevil (Orthorhinus cylindrirostris) here in Australia..

    1. The elephant weevil Orthorhinus cylindrirostris is endemic to Australia. Although it looks similar, the one in Madagascar would most likely be in a different genus. Posted 9 years ago
    2. Thanks for the suggestion, it definitely shares some characteristics. Posted 9 years ago
    1. Excellent! Such a pity that documentation is scarce but knowing the genus is very valuable. Posted 2 years ago
      1. I agree. So many of these observations have maybe a couple photos online to represent them. It'd be great to ID to species, but there is so little info out there. Posted 2 years ago
