Giant Lantern bug (Zanna genus) - side view, Nosy Mangabe, Madagascar This bug had me intrigued, and a little scared. I was doing a little macro tour on my own in Nosy Mangabe when I reached the end of a bush trail, where I met the ocean. I spent a little time here trying to photograph some very fast-moving crabs on the beach when something the size of a small bird landed in the tree right above my head. Front view:<br />

Curious about which bird just landed so close, Instead I saw what is on the photo. It took me several seconds to understand what I was looking at. A beautiful freak of nature it is. This is a very large lantern bug, likely from the Zanna genus. Side view:<br />
