  1. Excellent spotting Joe, was it hard to capture? Posted 10 years ago
    1. Quite easy, actually. The top-right corner of this photo is the edge of a compost pile, just north of a garden at Tinker Nature Park (one of the tight bundles of photos in my Geotag map). I spotted one Vole on the edge of the garden, and saw it run towards the south edge of the compost pile, so I walked towards it, hoping that the vole stayed outside the heap and didn't run into a hole.
As I got close, I suddenly heard a lot of scurrying to my left. I turned and saw probably 20 voles (most looked very young) run into about 6 different holes in the bottom of the compost pile. Another 4 or so were more brave, and stayed outside. This was one of the adults that stayed out.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get very close. I ended up scaring the rest of them inside trying to get a better shot.

Half of the compost pile (the side with the most obvious vole hole):

This photo only shows about half of the compost pile. There is a pile just about the same size on the other side of the wheelbarrow.<br />

You can see one of the vole holes fairly "easily" in the bottom center, with a path of missing grass just in front of it. There are actually four holes visible total in this photo, but three of them I can only spot because I saw them close up, and from different angles. 2. That compost looks like an ideal home to them :) Posted 10 years ago
