Some kind of plant hopper? I've not been able as yet to identify this tiny creature. Anyone able to shed any light on it at all? When I initially snapped it, I though it was some kind of really small moth but after seeing another member's picture of a plant hopper, this looks similar to it but smaller? 1. Yep - it's a leaf hopper or a tree hopper. It's a little hard to tell the size and the angle makes the head shape a bit hard to judge, but tree hoppers tend to be a bit larger and their heads tend to be more elaborately shaped - humped or horned. I'd say it's probably a tree hopper. Posted 10 years ago
    1. Thanks Morpheme, apologies for the not so helpful angles etc for identification. If it helps, the size was approximately 4-5mm. It's head didn't seem to have anything remarkable about it in relation to horns/humps. It was that small I had to take a picture of it with all the extension tubes attached and a +10 closeup lens attachment! Posted 10 years ago
      1. Indeed - they are both very small. Check out these tree hopper photos - http://treehoppers.insectmuseum.org/public/site/treehoppers/home/gallery
Some are very fancy, but many look like yours. Leaf hoppers tend to be flatter and more streamlined. http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/leafhoppers_cicadellidae

It's a pretty huge group of insects 3500 species! and there are likely lots that have never been officially cataloged so exact ID can be difficult. For North America we have BugGuide that can help, but finding guides for other places is a little harder.
