  1. Stuart, I doubt this is a blackfly. Flies have 2 wings (Diptera), while this one has 4 wings. Also Microlophium carnosum is an aphid species - Nettle aphid. Not present here.

    Or maybe this is another insect called "blackfly" which I don't know?

  3. Hi Jivko, no problem at all and thank you for the welcome. I've just edited the post as to not confuse people. I'm not entirely certain what type of fly this is - which seems rather silly of me given they are really common in the UK! I shall have to keep looking and correctly identify it :)

    Maybe I'll stick to ants - I can identify those ones ;)
