Young American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus) This is the smallest toad I've ever seen. I don't know how my wife spotted it. The white circle on the right is a US quarter, for scale. The American toad is a common species of toad found throughout the eastern United States and Canada. It is divided into three subspecies—the eastern American toad , the dwarf American toad , and the rare Hudson Bay toad . A new taxonomy places this species in the genus ''Anaxyrus'' instead of ''Bufo''.
