Small Butterfly

A small butterfly perches on a young ponderosa pine in north Idaho's Selkirk Mountains. This butterfly was very flighty and was enjoying the warm afternoon sun. Not sure of the species yet, any help is appreciated!

    This is tough, since most identification help is based on the top of their wings. I'd say it's a brush-footed, likely a copper or hairstreak, but pinpointing it is hard. This website offers some help with Idaho butterflies:

      I would agree with you, definitely a copper or hairstreak, but yes, it will be a tough one. I have other photos, but nothing of the dorsal view of the wings. The edge of the wings was a lighter color, almost a silver or white it seemed, but it is enhanced by the backlight. Posted 10 years ago

        There are a couple of species in the genus Callophrys with brown wings and similar pattern.
