Plains Zebra - Grinning Stripes A Burchell's Zebra (Plains Zebra) stallion in apparent grin mode. Actually, he was busy chewing cut, but his expression was to adorable not to photograph.
A stallion will be dominant over his herd, yet he will not rule it. A mare (probably one of the oldest ones) will rule the family. But the stallion will defend the group from predators, other stallions and any other threat that might arrive.
1. They are indeed very courageous:

Zebra faces lion in Tarangire, Tanzania (B&W) This zebra is leading a pack of a few hundred other Zebras and Wildebeests. After encountering a lion couple below the tree, this Zebra takes his responsibility into the extremes. Not only is it testing the danger, it is even challenging the lions. It should be said though that the lions are in mating mode, and cause no direct danger in that state. Still, an impressive sign of leadership.
