Plains Zebra - Grinning Stripes
A Burchell's Zebra (Plains Zebra) stallion in apparent grin mode. Actually, he was busy chewing cut, but his expression was to adorable not to photograph.
A stallion will be dominant over his herd, yet he will not rule it. A mare (probably one of the oldest ones) will rule the family. But the stallion will defend the group from predators, other stallions and any other threat that might arrive.
Burchell's zebra is a southern subspecies of the plains zebra. It is named after the British explorer and naturalist William John Burchell. Common names include: Bontequagga, Burchell's Zebra, Damara Zebra, and Zululand Zebra .
Burchell's zebra is the only sub-species of zebra which may be legally farmed for human consumption in the UK.
