Green Comma with Wings Spread
The first butterfly I have seen and photographed of the year! These commas usually don't start flying until April or May, but with the unseasonably warm end to our winter it seems this specimen decided to get an early start. I noted one other comma on the day, but was unable to photograph. Found in north Idaho's Selkirk mountains, elevation approximately 5,000 feet (1,524 meters).
The Green Comma is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. It is found in North America.
The wingspan is 45–64 mm. The butterfly flies from May to September depending on the location.
The larvae feed on Upland Willow , ''Betula lenta'', Alder, ''Rhododendron occidentale'', and ''Ribes'' species.
