  1. I think this is either a Meadow Vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) or a Rock Vole (Microtus chrotorrhinus), but I'm not exceptionally confident. Posted 10 years ago

      1. Not really, unfortunately (at least not based on my limited knowledge of Voles, which is entirely from about an hour or so of learning I did after I got home). He was on a large grassy patch on top of a cliff overlooking a "Watani Grasslands" exhibit at the North Carolina Zoo.
        The Zoo itself is located in a mountainous area, but with plenty of flat grassy areas too, so there are probably both types of Vole in the area.
