I see spatterdock flowers all the time, but I don't usually have a chance to see them this close! It always surprises me that the flowers never open more than this.

  1. I got curious and searched a bit on when this flower might open a bit more, but did not find much. This page does describe how it get pollinated, and by which species:

"Nuphar advena" is a species of "Nuphar" native throughout the eastern United States and at some parts of Canada, such as Nova Scotia. It is similar to the Eurasian species "N. lutea", and is treated as a subspecies of it by some botanists, though differing significantly in genetics.
