Time for some juiceee!! A night walk along the bushes will provide interesting macro subjects. I have seen the fruit piercing moth on many occasions, and have seen the feeding only once. That was amazing! Got to see feeding behavior of 2 individual moths. One is pictured here. The other also looked similar but cant say whether they belong to same species or not. This is not the common fruit piercing moth(moth with orange hind wings) Moths are even more fascinating than the butterflies. Experts say for every butterfly there are 10 moths in the world. The ratio may be even more. Also there is a misconception that moths are active only at night. It is not. There are moths that are active at day as well. Each species has its own time. fruit piercing moth, india, lantana fruit, moth Click/tap to enlarge

  1. I fully agree that moths are amazing and undervalued. Even in a low diversity country like where I live (Netherlands), there's only few butterfly species yet hundreds of moth species.

I never really tried it, but luring them should be easy. Some people use a white sheet and shine a light on it at night. I've seen a scientist do it in a remote area in New Guinea and by that single action alone, he discovered dozens of new species new to science. On a single white sheet!

  2. Fascinating, thank you, I had never heard of a fruit-piercing moth! Moths are very under appreciated which is surprising as they can be as vivid, unusual and just as interesting as butterflies. I shall make an effort to find more.
As an example though of day flying moths and their beauty:
Cool Maiden Yes, that is actually its name! A member of a group of day flying moths known as 'Handmaidens'. They are slow flying with large narrow fore-wings and reduced hind wings. The wings have clear spots and patches.<br />
As is often the case, I was looking for something else and came across this real gem. Amata kuhlweini,Arctiidae,Cool Maiden,Geotagged,Moth Week 2018,South Africa,Spring, ctenuchinae, day moths, handmaidens, lepidoptera, moths, south africa

    1. There is one species of fruit piercing moth that is very common here, but this one we never thought is a fruit piercing moth. However when we analysed the form factor of the moths that we found, many seems to be fruit piercing moths! Posted 10 years ago
