    1. They are crocus, they are a garden flower that's been pretty extensively bred, so there's lots of varieties. Interesting tidbit - saffron is produced from a the stigma of certain variety of crocus - crocus satvius (this isn't that one- though the flowers look very similar, on saffron crocus it's obvious that the stigma are large and very, very orange). I don't think they are that hard to grow - saffron is famously expensive more because of the labor involved in harvesting and the small amounts that are obtained for the labor.
