  1. This is definitely not Carya ovata or anything in the Carya genus, but I can understand how keying can get confusing! Carya typically has leaves arranged into pinnate groups of 5 to 7. (Ash trees are similar but these leaf groups are arranged opposite on branches rather than alternately).     I would be inclined to put this in the Prunus genus. Note the alternately arranged leaves with serrate margins. This is possibly Prunus serotina (Black Cherry).
