Walnut Caterpillars Ready for Molting These caterpillars will eventually develop into Walnut moths. They are considered a pest and will strip trees of their leaves, when they are ready to molt they move onto the tree trunk in a large mass like this, it really is quite a disturbing site. My brother found this mass and took me back so I could get some pictures. Datana integerrima,Missouri,United States, caterpillar mass, walnut caterpillar, walnut moth Click/tap to enlarge Promoted

  1. We have a species with similar behavior here in the Netherlands:

Yponomeuta spp. in oak tree, Uden, Netherlands The caterpillars of the Oak Processionary are slowly moving into Northern Europe due to the rising temperatures. They are considered a plague due to their irritating bristles, which cause irritation (or worse) on human skin. In the Netherlands, in most urban areas they are actively removed, yet you may encounter them in a forest. Europe,Macro,Netherlands,Slabroek,Uden
