Fly We see flies in our ever day lives and think nothing of swatting a few, but would you feel the same if you could see the intricate details. The complicated structures that make this tiny creature are mind boggling. The flying mechanisms alone leave me in owe.<br />

The little green/yellowish sack type structure sticking out below the wing is called a Halteres or halter (individual one). They are used like a gyroscope for identifying body rotation.  Below is a good video describing the flight of insects, in particular the fruit fly.<br />

  1. I initially thought this was a normal house fly (even though it was shot in the woods :P) but the mouth and abdomen look completely wrong. So if anyone can identify it please do so. Posted 11 years ago
