
'Alpha'
Chacma baboons are sexually dimorphic with females weighing as little as 50% of that of males. Males can reach a height of 120cm and weigh as much as 40kg. Males also brandish huge canines measuring up to 5cm, longer than a lions. The dominant 'Alpha' male will generally be the largest and has the task of protecting the group, in particular the females and youngsters. One moment a tender father, the next a formidable fighter as he protects his position from other males in the troop.
This is the closest I have ever been to an Alpha male baboon (around 3 meters), this guy normally remains on the outskirts of the group keeping a watchful eye on me when taking photos, so it was quite an exhilarating experience!

The chacma baboon is from the Old World monkey family. It is one of the largest of all monkeys. Located primarily in southern Africa, the chacma baboon has a wide variety of social behaviors, including a dominance hierarchy, collective foraging, adoption of young by females, and friendship pairings.
