Wild Coupling | Vinegar Fly

Not only fireflies find romance in your lawn.

Among the shattered grass blades,
two flies are invisible to everyone in their wild coupling.

  1. Hi Rick,
This is quite an old post but I was wondering if you have any close-up of these to confirm the ID. I am not even sure they are Drosophila but even if they were, there are so many species of them (more than 1500) that it is not possible to identify them from this photo.

    1. Thanks for commenting, Wildflower.
You're right, Vinegar Fly is a guess. Any idea how best to ID? Maybe just say Drosophila?

      1. Sorry, they don't look like Drosophila to me at all. Drosophila have smaller heads compared to the rest of the body. These seem to have larger heads and eyes. There are too many flies out there and without any close-up and colour I would not even try to guess the family.
