  1. Front view
Spider-hunting wasp? This one is proving difficult to identify but I think it is Episyron histrio as it matches the description in the 'Field Guide to Insects of South Africa'. However, their photo is not very clear and I am struggling to find another with a better picture of the head. Fall,Geotagged,Hymenoptera,South Africa, south africa, wasps

  2. I don't know if that makes a diference or not, but there is a white segment near the tail end and a white stripe along the eye that I cannot see on the reference photo from the guide. There are other species of the same genus in South Africa, but they are not described.

    1. Yes I did notice that and that is basically what is causing the problem. I did see one photo which looked identical (which I now cannot find!) which identified is as a questionable polistis fuscatus, but these are only in America and other photos are not the same. Waspweb I did not find very helpful. I will try some local experts and hope! Posted 11 years ago, modified 11 years ago
