Caterpillar Does anyone know what kind of caterpillar this is?  They ate all the leaves on my elderberry plants.  I had the plants for years and this is the 1st time this has happened. Click/tap to enlarge

Does anyone know what kind of caterpillar this is? They ate all the leaves on my elderberry plants. I had the plants for years and this is the 1st time this has happened.

  1. hi Emilia, this is probably not a caterpillar. It may be the larvae of a sawfly. Here's another one:
    Sawfly larva Dolerus  - eating down, Netherlands This larvae of a sawfly is literally eating itself down. Spotted near a pond in the south of the Netherlands. Geotagged,Heesch,Macro,The Netherlands

    And then a hero comes along... This is the front view of the larvea of a sawfly crawling between two leafs right towards me. They are quite lengthy and have a funny spherical head, almost like a doll. I am unsure of the exact species of sawfly, as there are so many. Geotagged,Heesch,Macro,The Netherlands
