Village Indigo Bird - Male in breeding colour
As I understand it there are 2 distinct subspecies ultramarina and amauropteryx. This is one of the ultramarina subspecies, generally found in the North of its range and it had the white bill as opposed to the amautopteryx ssp which generally has a red bill. The species is a brood parasite, much like the cuckoo that breeds in the UK. The female lays her eggs in the nests of other birds, specifically the red-billed firefinch in Ethiopia.
The village indigobird, also known as the steelblue widowfinch or the Combassou finch, is a small songbird belonging to the family Viduidae.
