
Sambar in water, Cat Tien National Park, Vietnam
A few photos of Sambar deer that can readily be seen in the open areas of Cat Tien National Park. Notable feature of this species is the wound-like spot below the throat. This is a gland used to mark scent, seen in both adult males and pregnant or lactating females during the mating season.

The sambar is a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent, South China, and Southeast Asia that is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.
