Phasmatodea - Stick insect Phasmatodea (sometimes called Phasmida) on the order of insects whose members are known as stick insects (in Europe and Australia), canes or sticks of errors (in the U.S. and Canada), phasmids, ghost insects and leaf insects (generally the family Phylliidae). Sequence name comes from the Greek φάσμα phasma, which means appearance or phantom, and refers to the similarity of many kinds of sticks or leaves. Their natural camouflage can make them very difficult to detect. Phasmatodea can be found worldwide in warmer areas, especially in the tropics and subtropics. The greatest diversity is in Southeast Asia and South America and then Australia. Phasmids also have a significant presence in the continental United States, mostly in the Southeast.
