Grasshopper

Hoping I identified it right. When I looked close, I saw this big insect eating up a spider. By the time I took this picture, only one leg was left.

  1. The Common Grasshopper Warbler is actually a bird... ;)
Interesting, I though grasshoppers were vegetarian.

  2. Removed that identification. I typed in Common Grasshopper and it seems like I was not careful enough. Posted 11 years ago
    1. There's nothing common about these grasshoppers. There are thousands of species and they are very hard to identify. According to this leaflet, there are 1750 valid species in India...

I tried to search last night, but didn't get too far. I think it is some kind of Tettigoniidae - katydid, bush cricket or long-horned grasshopper. You should try some local entomology sites and search for predatory or at least omnivore species. This should narrow down the search.

      1. I am curious too. It could be Bird Grasshopper. "It is easily identifiable also by the characteristic eyes with vertical black and white stripes. (Wiki)" - Family Acredidae, Genus Schistocerca or Anacridium

I couldn't find more detailed information.
