Chamois with missing horn (Rupicapra rupicapra) + video
During a hike in the Valle Gesso area of Piemont, Italy, we first spotted a single chamois not too far away. Up until then I had not seen that many chamois in the wild before, so I was pretty excited already. After walking some more along the quite lonely path and ascending a steep slope, we spotted a whole heard of chamois on the opposite ridge.
They were pretty far away, but I whipped out my tele-zoom and extender and managed to get some footage of the young ones joyfully running and jumping, measuring their strength against each other. It was one of those thrilling wildlife experiences that you cannot plan for.
The fun did not stop there, since later we saw some marmots…
… and on the way down a young ibex along with its mother.
The chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) is a goat-antelope species native to mountains in Europe, including the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, the European Alps, the Tatra Mountains, the Balkans, parts of Turkey, and the Caucasus. The chamois has also been introduced to the South Island of New Zealand.
