Coroneted fruit dove, Jalan Korea, Papua Funny backstory is that our local guide kept pointing to a spot in the canopy but I failed to see any bird. Not using a laser pointer, not using binoculars. 1. Wow, that definitely would be hard to see! I like the color edging the wing feathers. Guides have laser pointers?! Posted one year ago
    1. Yes, they do, to point out the exact location of a bird. It avoids this conversation:

      "See the tree over there?"
      > I see about 150 of them yes
      "The one in the back"
      > How far back?
      "At the end"
      > ....
"Sigh. The one with the horizontal branch"
      > There's many horizontal branches
      "With the big leaf!"
      > This is hardly descriptive
      "Never mind, it flew"
      > Oh, I think I saw where it was

With the laser pointer, they shine around or under the bird, as to not blind it or spook it.

        1. Plus me looking at things from an elevated height (typically), different angle. Thanks! Posted one year ago
  2. Yayyyyy Love me some Ptilinopus doves!! Great shot too, and amazing how sharp it is for shooting blind! Posted one year ago, modified one year ago
    1. Thanks! Here's a non-cropped shot of the scene. Note that it's already at 500mm, so the cropping of the better photo is very deep indeed.
