Wolf spider mother with babies Working my way through filling up the bird baths, I saw that a mother wolf spider with her babies on her back had fallen in to one of the baths. There she was, trying to break from the surface tension and climb the slippery sides with no luck. I took this floating shot, then placed her in a dry, covered area of the garden and was so happy to see her scurry off at speed to safety.
These amazing mother spiders within family Lycosidae carry their babies like this for a couple of weeks or so after they have hatched. Fascinating maternal care from this group of arachnids.
