jumping spider is having a fly for lunch

  1. I've removed the ID because Sarcophaga carnaria is a European species. There have been some reports of it in N. America, but those are likely based on outdated definitions of the species. See the note under 'Remarks' on BugGuide:

Also, it would be difficult to ID this fly to species without a view of the whole fly. Cool photo, though.

    1. I have an image on bugguide.net of a flesh fly they say is Sarcophaga, now no longer a correct ID I assume, outdated definitions of a species. Thanks. Charles Baxter Posted 2 years ago
      1. Not so -- there are flesh flies in the family Sarcophagidae in the US. So, whatever fly you posted on BugGuide (was it the same image/fly as this one?) could definitely have been a flesh fly. They are very good at IDing insects on BugGuide, so definitely trust in their judgment. But, for this particular image, it is hard to determine the ID of the fly. A dipterist could no doubt do it, but without an expert eye it is hard to tell. Posted 2 years ago
