australian bull ant Myrmecia deep creek conservation park south australia
these big bull ants have a nasty powerful bite penetrating straight through jeans with no effort, and can grow to over 40 mm (1.6 in) also called an inch ant or a bulldog ant..this one has a european honey bee well in hand!they are usually seen alone, which I feel is a good thing! not to be sat on or teased as their venom can induce anaphylactic shock in allergic sting victims! know to follow you home for revenge so dont let them see your face if confronted!
weird fact
"The bulldog-ant displays the most extraordinary will to live for if it is cut in two, a battle begins between the head and the tail. The head seizes the tail in its teeth, and the tail defends itself bravely by stinging the head: the battle may last for half an hour, until they die or are dragged away by other ants. "Myrmecia pyriformis" is an Australian ant. Myrmecia pyriformis belongs to the Myrmecia genus, a genus known as bull ants, being the largest known ants in the world. It is abundant in many major cities of Australia, but mostly spotted in the eastern states. The species is of a similar appearance to the Myrmecia forficata.
