  1. I think it may be a Nomad bee. Seeing several similar observations from your state but the red ones are rarely identified beyond genus Nomada. Posted 2 years ago
    1. Ah I was looking at bees too and having no success there either - but I think you've got it! I may be lucky - there may only be two species that the females have solid red abdomens. I'll have to do a little more digging... but unfortunately for the moment it's off to work with me :). I have a good idea of what their host is, I got some photo of them too, so that may also help. 1. That sounds promising! Posted 2 years ago
        1. The Nomada ruficornis species group seems promising:

          1. Looks visually identical to me, but seems a European species?

            1. Nomada ruficornis is European, but Nomada ruficornis species group is not:

I'm guessing the 'species group' means that the NA spottings are being called N. ruficornis, but could be just a similar, related species.

BugGuide says, "the ruficornis species group is relatively poorly defined and may prove to be non-monophyletic."

              1. Whoops, missed that! Posted 2 years ago
                1. It's really confusing how they name the groups. Posted 2 years ago
          2. I think you are exactly right. I was looking at erigeronis species group before I left for work - they are don't have any yellow spots, but they don't appear to have any black either - and mine does. ruficornis looks much more promising. Seems like the only ones classified that don't have yellow stripes are the "valida and relatives" https://bugguide.net/node/view/713763/bgimage Posted 2 years ago
            1. Nice find! That does look promising. Posted 2 years ago
