Carabus catenulatus
This striking specimen belongs to the large, cosmopolitan family of ground beetles with over 40.000 species. It was a lucky find in Slovenia.
Similar to many of its cousin species, it is nocturnal, that means it will walk all over the forest floor during nighttime in search for something to eat; and consequently, hard to find during daytime… This one had fallen into a concavity in the ground and had apparently not been able to get out on its own. We gladly freed it, and of course I took the opportunity to shoot some pictures!
There seems to be no common name neither in English nor in German, unlike for the similar looking Carabus problematicus which has much wider range.
Lateral view:

"Carabus catenulatus" is a species of beetle endemic to Europe, where it is observed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, mainland Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
