- The genus Agapostemon is a common group of Western hemisphere sweat bees of generally green or blue appearance (head and thorax always, sometimes also the abdomen in some females). There are some 45 species in the genus, ranging from Canada to Argentina.
- There are about 200 described species, distributed in five genera: Euglossa, Eulaema, Eufriesea, Exaerete and the monotypic Aglae. All exclusively occur in South or Central America (though one species, Euglossa viridissima, has become established in the United States).
All of these species are only found in the Americas. Whenever you identify any species, it is very important to check the distribution range, because very often there are more or less similar species, which occur in different parts of the wourld and belong to different genera respectively.
