Central Serengeti camp site This is the site where we spent 2 nights, right in the middle of the bush. The tents are behind me here. This is a mobile camp which stays for a few months during the season. At the time of our arrival, we were the only guests out of 18 tents, having a staff of 8 all to ourselves, only the 2nd day 2 more couples joined. During dark hours, one is guarded with every move you make. At night time you realize why, as you hear Hyenas circling your tent, and Lions, a bit further away, yet you can clearly hear their growls. The rock formation to the right was occupied during our 2nd night by a leopards, yet we only learned this when we left, the staff did not want to upset us. I wish they did "upset" us. 1. Wow thats an adventurous trip I believe..! But What is the security aspects that are taken care when you are staying in tents, as you have mentioned that the tents were surrounded by the hyenas, lions. Hope there are chances of wild attacking the tourists. Posted 11 years ago, modified 11 years ago
    1. Sunil, at night there was a guard keeping post as well, yet the guard let the Hyenas be. They're just scavenging around the tents looking for food, they will not attack a human in such a scenario. Guards refer to Hyenas as friends, part of the camp even. The lions were further away, big cats in the wild will typically not approach human settlements, although it does depend on various factors.

With these security measurements in place, the chance of being attacked by any such carnivore is near-zero. A much more likely threat to humans are the big herbivores, like the Hippo, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo. They won't attack for no reason, but you need to stay out of their way. At a place we were a few days before this camp site (Tarangire), an american doctor was killed by an Elephant just one week before we arrived there.

      1. That's good, and you are true about the animal behaviors, they attack only when they feel they are in the mid of danger. Great Ferdy, I hope we can find some adventurous article published in your blog about your thrilling trip. :) Posted 11 years ago
  2. Amazing, what an experience. I too would have been a bit 'upset' with the guards re the leopards! Posted 11 years ago
