Bacterial Mats

A bacterial mat that is growing in the warm waters that over-flow out of the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park. These bacterial mats may be several layers thick and the type of bacteria and where it grows depends on the water temperature, which is approximately 32-37 degrees Celsius here.

  1. Wow, that is incredible. How large is the area shown here? Do you have a photo of the whole area, just to get a perspective? I have never heard of these, so thank you! Posted 11 years ago
    1. It is a really interesting area, Claire. The area shown in the photo is about 1.5 by 1.5 meters. You can see the photo I posted to get an idea of the area this covers, it is quite large.
