Duckweed - Lemna minor I went to this pond a couple days ago to take some aquatic samples. But, I found it with only about 7 cm of water left! You can see the bottom in this photo, which I've IDed for the duckweed.

The pond should have 60+ cm of water. I didn't collect anything as I didn't want to disturb anything that might still be alive and living in the water. I imagine the water temp has also increased. Usually, this is a thriving pond that I collect from spring thru autumn.

The drought in my area continues with no real rain in sight. It's estimated that we need 50 cm of rainfall to recover.

Habitat: Deciduous forest
1. Sad to see! Similar situation hear, this morning read that for Europe, it's the worst drought in 500 years. Posted 3 years ago
    1. To add, interesting cultural discovery. The low water levels in some of our rivers reveal "hunger stones". These are stones with carvings in them warning of doom, as centuries ago the low water level would affect crops. Posted 3 years ago
      1. Wow, so sad! I am so concerned about the plants and creatures. I have a milkweed patch in my yard and I have found dead monarch caterpillars on it twice this week. They are just shriveled and died while they were eating, not even diseased. I'm also not mothing because nearly nothing comes to my light.

The droughts and floods this year are bound to have an impact that will carry over. It could even create new "normals". It all gives me a sense of dread.

        1. An expert here stated that nature is more resilient than we think, it can recover. If it were a single year. The problem is unusual drought 4 out of the last 5 years, it's starting to really hurt. Posted 3 years ago
          1. Exactly. Posted 3 years ago
      2. That's so interesting about the stones! I would be searching for them. ;P

        1. We would then lock you up, as they're regularly stolen :) Posted 3 years ago
          1. No! That's awful that people steal them! They should take a photo instead! Have you ever seen any? Posted 3 years ago
            1. No, the rivers in question are far from me, and most hunger stones are found in Germany and Central/Eastern Europe. Posted 3 years ago, modified 3 years ago

"Lemna minor", the common duckweed or lesser duckweed, is an aquatic freshwater plant of the genus "Lemna". They belong to the family of Lemnaceae, which are monophyletic to the Araceae family. "L. minor" is used as animal fodder, bioremediator, for wastewater nutrient recovery, and other applications.
