  1. Helophilus sp. is my guess, but pretty tricky one. Posted 3 years ago
    1. I'd agree. I've been looking through them - due to the stripes on the elytra, but haven't had much luck finding anything with a similar pattern on the abdomen, or such indistinct stripes. I also found another Helophilina in the same area, that I could ID, so there's that too. Posted 3 years ago, modified 3 years ago
      1. The obsidentify app suggests Helophilus hybridus, with no secondary candidates. They are rarely reported in your state but several observations just north to the border.

Visually...I don't know. Looks close but also variable. Feels more like a 90% match.

        1. I was certainly wondering about that one. The name hybridus, suggests to me that they may mix characteristics of other species... so could be very variable. I also noticed that there were some mapped right up in BC, which is only about 16 miles from where I was. I don't think flies care too much about the border, and their passports would be too little to read anyway ;) Posted 3 years ago, modified 3 years ago
          1. Maybe the appeal is more maple syrup. Posted 3 years ago
            1. lol - more on the east coast really... out here in the west sugar maples are not native. People are experimenting with making syrup from our local big leaf maples, but it's really more than a niche/boutique industry as of yet. Posted 3 years ago
