A Couple of Caspian Terns. Two of around 24 that were enjoying the summer sunshine on Centre Islet. The bird on the right has at least three leg bands and I am awaiting information on this bird.<br />

    1. Thanks! Don’t they make great subjects?! So lucky to see them. Went to the same place last night. The terns had vanished! Posted 3 years ago
      1. They were probably out there in the sea for some more fishing :-) Posted 3 years ago
        1. Hope so! From other birders on Cortes Island I was quite lucky to see them. I have read, “widespread but typically uncommon”. Posted 3 years ago
  2. The banded tern on the right was banded near Walla Walla, Washington while still in the nest on June 26, 2012! I just have to wonder how many kilometres that bird has flown in those eight years? Posted 3 years ago

The Caspian tern is a species of tern, with a subcosmopolitan but scattered distribution. Despite its extensive range, it is monotypic of its genus, and has no subspecies accepted either. In New Zealand it is also known by the Maori name "taranui".
