  1. Very possibly - or Pholiota squarrosa. Macroscopically they are virtually identical, though I've heard that one (squarrosa) may smell like garlic and is sticky between the scales, but both of those characteristics can be quite subjective. Out east you also have another lookalike, Leucopholiota decorosa, that is white spored rather than brown. Posted 3 years ago, modified 3 years ago
    1. Oh, right -- I always forget about Leucopholiota decorosa. I didn't take note of any smell, but there could have been one. This may have to stay unidentified, I think, I have no idea what the gills looked like or what color the spores were. Thanks for the information, though. I need to be more diligent. Posted 3 years ago
