Thanks for liking the photo. This series are basically a tryout with the new diffuser, the one Julien made for me. I'm still struggling a bit and having variable results, but when it works, it works well: you get this soft exposure without hard shadows or reflections. Posted 8 months ago
Overall, I like the diffuser. But, I really doubt it will be practical to take on hikes. It's too big and will probably scare away bugs and get in my way. But, for studio photography, I like it a lot.

Results vary as light is really complicated but in cases where it works, it works really well. Meaning, I'm seeing a very significant improvement over my usual twin-flash setup which creates hard shadows and ugly reflections.
There's also downsides. It's indeed big and fragile, and sometimes I can't make the shot as the diffuser touches foliage, displacing the subject. Flash range is a bit more limited compared to without the diffuser. Sometimes the diffuser casts a shadow, making focusing hard. I have a small internal light in the diffuser to solve this, but I need a stronger one.
I will definitely continue experimenting with it. For studio work it's definitely a keeper and I hope to learn to use it well in the field too. Let's see! Posted 8 months ago
It actually is a DIY, just not made by me. Julien made it for me:
If you'd like to learn more about these types of diffusers, it's conceptually similar to the so-called "Beetle diffuser":
