Fungus Gnat - Docosia sp. I collected a couple specimens of this fly as they are really hard to ID. This photo was taken under a microscope. The background is just foam board. I like to use it under the scope when looking at tiny insects because the texture of the foam makes it easier to manipulate the insects.<br />

  1. This is awesome!

How small are they? I'm impressed by the quality of the shot given it's from a microscope. Very nice.

    1. Thanks! This one is pretty big, ~4 mm. Most that I captured are half that size. One midge that I captured is only the size of a pinpoint. Posted 3 years ago
      1. Wow, I imagine handling/positioning them is tricky! Posted 3 years ago
        1. Definitely tricky. I have not learned how to be gentle enough that they stay intact AND I see the features that I need for ID. Posted 3 years ago
