Scoopwing moth, Milpe Bird Sanctuary, Ecuador
This moth either has an astonishing feature I haven't seen before, or I'm imagining things. When you look at this moth as a whole, I hope you agree with me that it looks very wet and reflective. Combined with its color, it could easily be mistaken for a wet rotting leaf.
The crazy part is that the reflection is fake. The moth isn't wet. Every white highlight you see on the wings are fully white scales. It is part of the wing pattern itself.
So the question is whether this is an "intentional" evolutional trait that aids in camouflage, or just a relatively random pattern that I (perhaps incorrectly) interpret as a reflection.
In other words, either this moth is crazy or I am. Your votes please.
