Sweet Birch Female Seed Catkin - Betula lenta Trees produce seeds every 1-4 years, starting at around 40 years of age.  Male catkins are pendulous and ~1.5 cm long. Female catkins are half the size of the male catkins and are upright.  I think this is a female catkin plus two stalks from catkins that have lost their seeds already.<br />
