Sweet Birch - Betula lenta There were no leaves on the tree and I forgot to go back later in the summer...I&#039;ll try next year to get some shots of the leaves!<br />

The fermented sap from this species was once used to make birch beer. When crushed, the leaves and twigs smell like wintergreen.<br />

Sweet Birch Female Seed Catkin - Betula lenta Trees produce seeds every 1-4 years, starting at around 40 years of age.  Male catkins are pendulous and ~1.5 cm long.
