Eastern Bluebird - Sialia sialis This bluebird lived in my Mom's yard this past summer. But, unlike "normal" birds, it spent most of its time sitting on the outside of her windows trying to get inside. It will just sit and look in the window, flutter up into the air, and then sit back down. All the while, it makes little sounds. Then, it moves on to another window. Or, it perches on the hummingbird feeder, which is mounted on a window. Then, it will move to the door knob. It does this for HOURS everyday. Everyday!

It seemed that he had left in early autumn. But, now he's back. I spent the past couple days watching him and wondering what he is thinking/trying to do. He will literally sit on the window all day, staring inside. Every now and then, he flies off to the woods to eat some bittersweet berries, but then returns. My Mom contacted Audubon, but they have not responded with any suggestions or help.
1. Is the custest story..could it be that she sees its own reflection in the glass of doors and windows and that atracts her? Maybe you shoudl open the door and see where she goes :-) Posted 3 years ago
1. Lol, could be! I actually had a window open for awhile and it flew right up to the window and hovered there for a minute before flying away.

People have been speculating that maybe it is territorial and is "fighting" its reflection. Or, perhaps curious and is watching the people and animals inside. Or, maybe it thinks inside the house is part of the woods (my mom's house is a log cabin and the inside is natural wood with lots of house plants). Or, maybe this bird is just a bit nuts, lol.

1. Thanks! I had low expectations because the weather was pretty bad. I wish the eye was in focus, but am overall satisfied that the shot is better than I expected. Posted 3 years ago
3. Very cute! Posted 3 years ago
1. Thanks, he's a handsome, albeit confused, fella. Posted 3 years ago
4. Beautiful bird.We had the same behaviour from our UK Grey Wagtails but they were "attacking"our car wing mirrors.I had to put bags over the mirrors in the end because there was so much mess on the cars lol. Posted 3 years ago
1. Oh wow, lol. I can definitely see the need for that. This bird has been pooping all over the windows and decks. Posted 3 years ago
5. Love the fall colors against the blue of the bird, beautiful stuff :-) Posted 3 years ago

The eastern bluebird is a small North American migratory thrush found in open woodlands, farmlands, and orchards. The bright-blue breeding plumage of the male, easily observed on a wire or open perch, makes this species a favorite of birders.
