White-Footed Mouse (Peromyscus leucopus)

Hiding between two trees which had grown together at the forested edge of the Natchaug River.

        White-footed Mice - Peromyscus leucopus These cute mice were about 5-7 cm long (excluding tails), had black eyes, pale pink noses, rounded ears, and a white ventral surface. They had a wide, darkish dorsal stripe.<br />

Habitat: Found in a map box at a nature center. A month or so ago, someone put an old, empty bird's nest in this box. Today, we found these two mice in the box. They had gotten in through a small opening in the side of the hinged box, had rearranged the bird's nest, and made a cozy home for themselves.<br />

The white-footed mouse is a rodent native to North America from Ontario, Quebec, Labrador, and the Maritime Provinces to the southwestern United States and Mexico. In the Maritimes, its only location is a disjunct population in southern Nova Scotia. It is also known as the woodmouse, particularly in Texas.
