White-Footed Mouse (Peromyscus leucopus)
Hiding between two trees which had grown together at the forested edge of the Natchaug River.
According to @cadecampbell on iNaturalist, he IDed it as this species for this reason: "Dull bicolouration of tail and broad, dark dorsal stripe (not diagnostic, but a common characteristic)."

The white-footed mouse is a rodent native to North America from Ontario, Quebec, Labrador, and the Maritime Provinces to the southwestern United States and Mexico. In the Maritimes, its only location is a disjunct population in southern Nova Scotia. It is also known as the woodmouse, particularly in Texas.
